2026 CHANGE Grantees

Dedicated.  Caring.  Transformative.  Experiential.

These are just a few of the words our 2026 CHANGE Grantees chose to describe their work. We are inspired by these nonprofits, each working with purpose and passion to improve the lives of San Diego residents.  Selected through a competitive application process, these organizations have been awarded in one of our two priority areas:  Education & Training and Health & Wellness.

Each grantee will receive unrestricted funding to support their mission in the way they determine most impactful.  Learn more about each of these organizations and their programming below:

Education & Training

San Diego Refugee Tutoring (SDRT) supports students from refugee backgrounds from preschool through high school.  Tutors work one-on-one with students, focusing on core English and math skills through direct instruction, reading sessions, and educational games.  Most students are multilingual, speaking several languages in addition to English. They come from diverse backgrounds including Burma, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Sudan, Haiti, Central African Republic, Syria, and Afghanistan.

The CHANGE Grant will provide assistance to SDRT’s Family Academic Liaisons program.  The liaisons, all of whom have lived experience as refugees and speak the first languages of the students’ families, are instrumental in increasing attendance at tutoring and events, translating workshops and academic information for parents, and building student and family community.

Health & Wellness

The mission of Compassion It is to inspire daily compassionate actions and attitudes, where compassion is practiced by every person, for every person, every day.  Through educational trainings and tangible tools, Compassion It empowers individuals and organizations to make compassion a priority.

The CHANGE Grant will directly support delivery of Compassion It’s innovative four-week compassion training program, advancing both mental health and wellness and professional development for healthcare workers in San Diego.  The program aims to support the emotional well-being of professionals in care settings where stress and burnout is high and resources have been reduced in recent years.  Funding will also go towards refining training materials, supporting facilitation, and expanding access to compassion-based education and workforce development opportunities for service-oriented professionals.

Health & Wellness

Challenged Sailors San Diego (CSSD) provides free adaptive sailing opportunities every weekend for individuals living with disabilities, including multiple sclerosis (MS), cerebral palsy (CP), traumatic brain injuries, and quadriplegic/paraplegic conditions.  The organization operates eight Martin 16 sailboats especially equipped for adaptive sailing, each with a companion sailor seated behind the participant. CSSD’s program offers inclusive access to physical activity, mental engagement, and the therapeutic benefits of time spent on the San Diego Bay.

Funds from the CHANGE Grant will support the costs of American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters for deaf and hard-of-hearing sailors. This will enable fuller participation in regattas and monthly board meetings, strengthening engagement with both the organization and the broader sailing community.

Education & Training

Remember Us the Holocaust (RUTH) is committed to documenting and preserving the legacy of Holocaust survivors. The RUTH exhibit at the La Jolla Riford Library features the personal stories of survivors living in San Diego and presents significant Holocaust artifacts and World War II memorabilia. As the only exhibit of its kind in the region, it offers local residents a powerful opportunity to engage with history, fostering a deeper understanding of the Holocaust and its lasting impact.

Funds from the CHANGE Grant will support RUTH’s ongoing efforts to document personal histories and expand educational outreach. This includes enhancing public exhibits and facilitating direct engagement with Holocaust survivors by bringing them to schools, military installations, and other community venues to share their experiences firsthand.
